At age 56, the idea of embarking on a meditation practice seemed akin to following the mystical New Age practices that emerged in the 1970s. I had no interest and anyone who praised the benefits of meditation only provoked my cynicism. Then my husband – perhaps the most cynical person I know – signed us up for a mindfulness meditation course at UCLA. Our instructor introduced us to The DEN, where I met Hilary, and have been coming nearly daily for a over a year. Hilary clearly lives a deeply spiritual life, but never pushes her beliefs on her clientele. Instead she shares practical techniques for calming the mind and remaining in the present, without layering every thought with a complex, anxiety provoking story. She is incredibly wise about the human condition, and while she takes her practice and the teachings very seriously, she never takes herself too seriously. You will learn this the first time you hear her engaging, raucous laugh!
Hilary Jackendoff is a Los Angeles based Tantric meditation teacher, in the North Indian lineage of the Bihar School of Yoga. After completing an intensive, two-year ashram-based Teacher Training in New South Wales, Australia, Hilary moved to Los Angeles. She began teaching meditation full-time, blending her traditional ashram education with her Jersey sensibilities, committed to sharing ancient practices in an accessible, modern way. She is currently a Senior Teacher at The Den Meditation in Hancock Park, where she co-created the studio’s 400 hour Meditation Teacher Training, the first of its kind in Los Angeles. Hilary developed Sleep Class, her primary corporate wellness offering, based on the popular practice of Yoga Nidra, a beginner-friendly, but powerful deep relaxation meditation, beneficial in managing a range of conditions, from insomnia and anxiety to jet-lag and chronic fatigue. In addition to regular group classes at The Den Meditation, Hilary also offers private in-home sessions. Anxiety management, chakra balancing and Yoga Nidra sessions are among her offerings. In 2016, she co-founded Zen Test Prep, a holistic approach to combating test and performance anxiety.
Hilary was raised in New Jersey by Catholic and Jewish parents, and she spent much of her spiritually confusing (and television-free) childhood ‘meditating’ in front of a makeshift prayer shrine. In college, she was spiritually drawn to Buddhism, and though she began her education as a Religion major, she graduated with a degree in Philosophy, preferring to explore (and argue about) a wider range of ideas. After graduation, Hilary traveled to New Zealand, hoping to discover the world and learn how to farm. After a brief dalliance with the soil, she spent some time in a Tibetan Buddhist Monastery before stumbling into an ashram, where she first encountered traditional Hatha yoga, as well as the Vedic and Tantric traditions of meditation. The following year, Hilary made a pilgrimage to India, where she spent some time studying the more esoteric aspects of Kundalini Tantra, as taught by Swami Satyananda Saraswati. It was on this trip to India that she realized she had found her spiritual path, clearly laid out for her in the teachings of Swami Satyananda and his lineage, the Bihar School of Yoga. She received initiation into the lineage and committed herself spiritually to living a yogic lifestyle and sharing the wisdom teachings of Tantric Yoga.
After leaving India, Hilary headed to Australia, where she spent two years living at Mangrove Yoga Ashram. She immersed herself in traditional ashram life, practicing and studying karma yoga, Tantric meditation, Hatha yoga, kirtan and the science of mantra, as well as exploring the finer points of Yogic and Hindu philosophy. While living at Mangrove Ashram, she completed a 2 year Teacher Training based on the teachings of her lineage, the Bihar School of Yoga. Hilary’s formal training was comprised of approximately 2,500 hours.
The Bihar School of Yoga is an internationally renowned system of Integral Yoga focused on harmonizing the mind, body, and emotions. It provides a systematic approach to self-transformation, grounded in both ancient practices and modern science. In 2014, Hilary moved to Los Angeles to channel her inside-out approach to wellness into a her teaching career.
Hilary’s ashram training has grounded her teaching in the complementary philosophies of Tantra and Yoga. She is committed to providing a pragmatic approach to meditation and spiritual development. She teaches a range of accessible, progressive meditation practices, designed to systematically build awareness of the subtle body, thus laying the groundwork for more advanced Tantric meditation techniques.
Hilary is a student first, a teacher second. As a teacher of teachers and a recovering Western Philosophy major, she encourages her Teacher Training students to dive deep into source texts and find authentic truth for themselves, while recognizing, respecting and understanding the historical context that frames the various lineages of practice.
Although Hilary believes meditation should be taken seriously and committed to with devotion, regularity and focus, she encourages her students to adopt a sense of open-mindedness and a spirit of play around their practice and within their lives. Hilary is fully committed to showing up authentically for her students, without pretense, without ego and with the deep desire to serve.
Hilary offers a range of services, including in-home private sessions, group classes at The Den Meditation, Zen Test Prep sessions designed to help manage test anxiety, and Sleep Class, her primary corporate wellness offering. In addition to meditation, Hilary incorporates mantra, mudra, bandha and breath-work as practical methods for managing and shifting energetic states. She is also available to guide students in the therapeutic cleansing practices of Hatha Yoga, designed to purify the respiratory and digestive systems.
Hilary is one of the most authentic teachers of our times. Her dedication toward her craft is impeccable. You will be refreshed, inspired, and rejuvenated after a private session with her or a meditation class.
