Meditation is a heck of a wellness trend these days, and for good reason. I’ve been rambling about the benefits of meditation for the last…10 years or so, and I actually sometimes get asked about it now!! Recently, I was asked to share some of the science-ey benefits with Livestrong.com.
When I first got into meditation, I was pumped about it because I was deeply immersed in a hardcore Yogic tradition of non-dual Shaivite Tantra. The scriptures said meditation was the key to purifying the cosmic stew of my consciousness and getting ‘enlightened.’ Once I developed a regular practice, I became one of those annoying zealots who recommended meditation for everything that ailed ya.
At the beginning, I didn’t really understand how to explain the benefits to the poor people I harangued (mostly friends and family). I was really just promoting it based on my own personal experience. Basically…I was becoming less of an asshole. Less selfish, less self-righteous, less angry, less reactive. All of the asshole-ishness that resided within my black little heart started to subside a little.
Now, let’s be clear – it’s not GONE. I’m not a saint because I meditate. But I am more self aware, more patient, more conscious of other people, more present in my relationship and in my daily life…and just generally more peaceful. Now, for many – those benefits are enough of a sales pitch, but I still couldn’t convince some of the ‘running is my meditation’ folk.
So I started to dive into WHY I was becoming less of an asshole, neurologically – simply from sitting in silence and stillness every day. Knowing the deep neurological and physiological benefits of meditation was SO exciting. Huzzah! I could finally explain to all of the skeptics why I was right and they were wrong!! (See? Still a little self-righteous!!)
I got the chance to share some of the nerdy neuroscience with Livestrong.com in a ‘Celebrities Who Meditate’ article. And if celebrities do it…
